Following on from a multi-disciplinary training, with degrees in Geography and Geology, Pauline’s research takes an interdisciplinary social science approach to the co-ordination of environmental issues with other priorities. Examples include: incorporation of industrial ecology principles into economic development & waste management; integration of eco-design in product design; building the capacity for sustainability in waste management.  Current research includes the governance of recovery of high value resources from industrial residues funded by the UK NERC, ESRC and DEFRA. She is the vice president of the International Sustainable Development Research Society

Professor of Sustainability Management and Director of the Institute of Systems Sciences, Innovation and Sustainability Research, University of Graz, Austria. He is board member of the International Sustainable Development Research Society (ISDRS) and served as subject editor for CSR and industrial ecology of the Journal of Cleaner Production until 2016.

He is conducting research on the operationalization of sustainable development at the corporate level, on sustainability strategies and (sustainable) business models, on sustainable innovation, on measuring company impacts related to sustainability, on sustainability design and on circular economy/industrial ecology as well as inter-organizational management related to sustainable development.

Sandra Caeiro, PhD in Environmental Engineering, is Associate Professor in the Department of Science and Technology at Universidade Aberta (UAb) and a senior researcher Centre for Environmental and sustainability research at NOVA University of Lisbon. Her main research and teaching areas include environmental management and assessment tools and education for sustainable development. She is vice-coordinator of the PhD in Social Sustainability and Development and coordinator of the Section of Applied Sciences, Environment and Society at UAb. She is Associate editor at Journal of Cleaner Production, Elsevier and on the editorial board of the journals of Ocean and Coastal Management, Latin American Journal of Management for Sustainable Development, and BioMed Research International.

Andy Jonas (BA Durham University; MA, PhD The Ohio State University) is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Hull, where he has worked since 1995. He has held visiting academic positions in Australia, Canada, the USA and Finland. His research interests include urban and regional development, local environmental governance and the transition to a low-carbon urban economy. He has published five books and more than 100 journal articles and book chapters. He has also extensive experience monitoring and evaluating the regional impact of community economic development projects.

Andrea Raggi is full professor of Industrial Ecology and related issues. He is Director of the PhD Program in Business, Institutions, Markets in the same University. For almost 3 decades, he has carried out academic research and teaching. His research perspective includes environmental management systems, life cycle sustainability assessment, industrial ecology. His research is mainly of an interdisciplinary nature, also involving engagement with stakeholders (mainly industry); he has participated in various research projects involving multi- and inter-disciplinary collaborations, both at a national and international level.


Dr Tomás Ramos

Tomás B. Ramos is Professor of Strategic Environmental Assessment and Planning at NOVA University Lisbon, School of Science and Technology, and senior researcher at CENSE, Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research. He holds a PhD on Environmental Engineering and his research activity is focused on sustainability assessment and indicators, including impact assessment, stakeholder engagement, organisational performance management and reporting. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Cleaner Production and member of the Editorial Board of the journals Sustainable Development, Business Strategy and Development, Heliyon, and Journal of Environmental Assessment Policy and Management. He is also member of the Board of Directors of the International Sustainable Development Research Society (ISDRS).

Roberta Salomone is Full Professor of Commodity Science and Deputy Director of the Department of Economics of the University of Messina.  She participated to various research groups, also as national coordinator, and she is author of more than 110 publications on national and international scientific journals, books and proceedings. She teaches Quality and Environmental Management, Sustainability Management, and Industrial Ecology in bachelors, master degree, PhD courses and specialization courses.  Her main research interests are: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and other environmental assessment and management systems and tools; Management for Sustainability; Industrial Ecology and Industrial Symbiosis.  She is: expert for the European Commission (DG Research & Innovation); reviewer for VQR 2004-2010 and member of the panel of expert for the area of Economics, Business Economics and Statistics for VQR 2011-2014 in the Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of the University System and Research (ANVUR); member of the Board of the Italian LCA Network; member of the Board of the Italian Academy of Commodity Sciences; Member of the Board of Professor of the PhD in “Economics, Management and Statistics” – Universities of Messina, Palermo, Catania.


Prof Walter Vermeulen

Based at Utrecht University (NL), but also linked to Stellenbosch University (SA), Vermeulen has a long-standing experience in analysing progress in implementing environmental practices in business in many different countries, both inside companies and in their socio-economic networks. He is especially focusing on new forms of private governance in international supply chains, both in Europe as well as in supplier countries worldwide and in practices of circular economy. He also published articles on the essence of the concept of sustainable development and the social dimension. Vermeulen is the president of the International Sustainable Development Research Society ( He has been also program leader of the International Master Sustainable Development at Utrecht University.
